    Life summary:

    Dr. Zakir Husain was the first Muslim President of India. Also, he was the third president of the country — i.e. from 13th May 1967till 3rd May 1969. However, he was the President for a very short time period.  Husain was the co-founder of Jamia Millia Islamia University. Also, he was presented the highest national award of the country — i.e. Bharat Ratna — in the year 1963.


Bio

    Dr. Zakir Husain was born in Hyderabad in a Kheshgi tribal family of Pashtuns. The latter are the ethnic group of people spread in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Initially the family lived in Kaimganj, Uttar Pradesh. But, they shifted to Hyderabad after the birth of Husain. 

    His family:

    Husain had seven more brothers. He was the second son of his parents. 

    His father was Fida Husain Khan who died when Zakir Husain was just 10 years old. Further, his mother Naznin Begum died when he was just 14 years of age.

    His education:

    He completed his schooling from Islamia High School in Etawah. He later on finished his college and graduated from Anglo-Muhammadan Oriental College, now known as Aligarh Muslim University. He was a popular student leader during his college days.

    He received a doctorate degree in Economics from the University of Berlin in the year 1926.

    His marriage:

    Dr. Zakir Husain married at the age of 18 years in the year 1915. His wife was Shah Jahan Begum with whom he had two daughters named Safia Rahman and Sayeeda Khan.

    Foundation of Jamia Millia Islamia:

    When Husain was 23 years old, he along with some other students and teachers laid the foundation of National Muslim University in Aligarh on 29th October 1920. They then shifted it to Karol Bagh in New Delhi in the year 1925. On 1st March 1935 they again shifted it to Jamia Nagar in New Delhi and renamed it as Jamia Millia Islamia (a Central University).

    Other Achievements of Dr. Zakir Husain are:

    •Became Vice-Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University

    •Was nominated as a member for the upper house of the Parliament in 1956 

    •Became governor of Bihar in the year 1957 till 1962

    •Became the second Vice President of India from 1962 till 1967

    •Was elected as the President of India on 13th May 1967. During his inaugural speech he said that whole of India was his home and all the people living here were his family

    •During his Presidential tenure, he visit four countries — viz. Yugoslavia, Hungary, Nepal and USSR.

    His death:

    Dr. Zakir Husain died on 3rd May 1969. He was the first Indian President to die in office. He is buried on the campus of Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.

    Efforts to commemorate him:

    •A college was started at Ilayangudi after this great educationist in the year 1970. The sole objective was to promote higher education in the region of Ilayangudi.

    •Also, the Engineering College of Aligarh Muslim University is named after him to honour the late President of India.
