Events after Partition
Also, when he turned 18, the unfortunate event in Indian history took place i.e. partition. Consequently, Hindu-Muslim riots were at peak during that time and a friend of Dutt’s father named Yakub helped saved lives of Dutt’s family.
Initially the family settled near the bank of Yamuna river at a place called Mandauli at Yamuna Nagar in Punjab (presently in Haryana). The family later on shifted to Lucknow and finally to Bombay.
His struggling days
In Bombay, Dutt took up a job at the BEST transport services. He also worked for one of the then most popular and oldest radio stations of Asia; Radio Ceylon.
His Film Career
Sunil Dutt entered the film industry in the year 1955 with the movie Railway Platform. However, he got actual recognition from the superhit film of 1957 Mother India where he was starred along with his future wife Nargis in the lead role. Dutt ruled the box office during the period from late 1950s and 60s. He also tried his hand at direction and production and thus, directed and produced many movies. One such film was titled Reshma Aur Shera in 1971
The Fire Incident on the sets of Mother India
As per the industry sources, there was a fire that broke on the sets of Mother India. Nargis, who was the lead actress, got stuck in it and Dutt very bravely brought her out from the fire that too safely. It was this gesture of Dutt that impressed Nargis and the two fell in love.
Sunil Dutt and Nargis got married on 11 March 1958 despite the fact that Dutt was younger to Nargis Bin age. He has three kids son Sanjay Dutt, who is also a popular bollywood actor. His daughters are Priya and Namrata Dutt. The latter is married to Kumar Gaurav, the son of late actor Rajendra Kumar.
His Charitable Causes
He founded an organization to treat Cancer patients named after his wife; Nargis Dutt Foundation. The reason for the same is that Nargis Dutt too died of cancer. Also, Dutt was a sponsor of India Project, an organization similar to Operation Smile to treat kids with facial deformities.
He was appointed as Sheriff of Mumbai in the year 1982. The position was bestowed upon him by Maharashtra Govt.
He also received Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 1995.
Sunil Dutt died of heart attack on 25 May 2005 at his residence at Bandra in Mumbai.
