    Shammi Kapoor was a famous Bollywood film actor and director. He was a leading actor from the late 1950s until the early 1970s. He was known as Elvis Presley of India.


    Shammi Kapoor was born as Shamsher Raj Kapoor. He was born in Bombay (now Mumbai) to the famous film and theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsharni Kapoor. Shammi was the second of the three sons born to Prithviraj Kapoor. His siblings were Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor, both of whom were successful Hindi Film actors.
    Though Kapoor was born in Mumbai but he spent a major portion of his childhood in Peshawar in the Kapoor Haveli and in Calcutta (now Kolkata). 
    His father was involved with New Theatres Studios and was acting in films.

    His Education
    He completed his Montessory and Kindergarten from Kolkata. After returning from Bombay, he first went to St. Joseph's Convent, Wadala and then, to Don Bosco School. 
    He finished his Matric schooling from New Era School at Hughes Road. Kapoor had a short stint at Ramnarain Ruia College. He joined his father’s theatrical company Prithvi Theatres after his brief college education.

    His Entry Into Hindi Cinema
     He entered the cinema world in the year 1948, as a junior artiste, at a meagre salary of Rs. 50 per month. He remained associated with Prithvi Theatres for the next four till the year 1952. 
    He made his debut in the Hindi Films in the year 1953, when the film Jeevan Jyoti was released.

    His Marriage
    Shammi Kapoor met Geeta Bali in the year 1955, during the shooting of the film Rangeen Raaten, where he was the leading actor whereas Geeta Bali played a cameo. Four months later, they married at Banganga Temples, near Napean Sea Road of Mumbai. They had a son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, on 1 July 1956, at Shirodkar's Hospital, Mumbai, a year after they were married. Five years later in the year 1961, they had a daughter named Kanchan. 
    Geeta Bali died from smallpox in the year 1965. Shammi Kapoor married Neila Devi on January 27, 1969. She belonged to the former Royal family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat.

    Shammi Kapoor was the Founder and Chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI). He played a vital role in setting up internet organizations like the Ethical Hackers Association. Kapoor also maintained a website dedicated to the Kapoor family.

    Shammi Kapoor was a follower of Haidakhan Baba.

    Kapoor suffered from chronic Renal Failure and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai on 7 August 2011. His condition deteriorated and he was kept on ventilator support. 
    He died on 14 August 2011 at 05:15 am IST, due to chronic renal failure. He was 79 years old. His funeral was held on Monday, 15 August at Banganga cremation ground, Malabar Hill, Mumbai. His son, Aditya, performed the last rites at the cremation. The entire Kapoor family was present at his funeral. 
    Shammi Kapoor won the following awards during his career:

    •Filmfare Best Actor Award in the year 1968 for the movie Brahmachari 
    •Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award in the year 1982 for the movie Vidhata
    •Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 1995

    He won an award at IIFA for Invaluable Contribution To Indian Cinema in the year 2002
    He won Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2005

    He won Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievement in the year 1999
    He won star Screen Lifetime Achievement Award in the year 2001

    •In the year 1998 he won Kalakar Award – Special Award for "contribution in Indian Cinema
    •In the year 2001 he won Lifetime Achievement Award at Anandalok Award
    •Living Legend Award by the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) 
    •2008 – Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to Indian cinema at the Pune International Film Festival (PIFF) 
    •Rashtriya Gaurav Award

    To commemorate him

    To commemorate Kapoor, his brass statue was unveiled at Walk of the Stars at Bandra Bandstand in Mumbai.
