DATE OF BIRTH: 23 November 1926
PASSED AWAY ON: 24 April 2011
PLACE OF BIRTH:  Puttaparthi, Madras Presidency British India
    DEATH PLACE: Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh

Sathya Sai Baba was an eminent Indian spiritual teacher who claimed to be the reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi. He was born in Puttaparthi, in the old Madras Presidency of British India during the pre-independence era.

He started The Sathya Sai Organisation to enable all its members to undertake services and activities to promote spiritual advancement. Today, the organization has more than 1,200 branches known as Sathya Sai Centres in 126 countries. With the help of his organisation, Sathya Sai Baba established a number of free clinics, ashrams, hospitals, drinking water projects, auditoriums, schools, etc.

Sathyanarayana Raju was born in a Raju family to parents Meesaraganda Easwaramma and Peddavenkama Raju Ratnakaram in the village of Puttaparthi.

    He had four siblings:
    • Elder brother Ratnakaram Sesham Raj,
    • Sisters Venkamma and Parvathamma,
    • Younger brother Janakiramiah

He was an intelligent child with exceptional brilliance and was very charitable by nature from a very tender age. However, he was not very academically oriented and was more interested in devotional music, dance and drama that were spiritual in tone. His miraculous abilities were known from a very young age as he was famous for materialising eatables out of thin air.

His personality underwent a drastic change in 1940 after a mysterious incident.

    The Story of His Proclaimation....

On 8 March 1940, Sathya Sai Baba was living with his elder brother Sesham Raju in Uravakonda, a small town near Puttaparthi. There he was stung by a scorpion and lost consciousness. He remained in an unconscious state for several hours. When he gained his consciousness back, he was not the same person and his behaviour underwent a remarkable change.

He started singing Sanskrit verses without even knowing the language. His parents brought Sathya back home and took him to many priests, doctors and exorcists after the doctors declared his behaviour as hysteria. In one such event of treating him an exorcist at Kadiri, a town near Puttaparthi, tortured him while curing him. During another incident his father beat him with a stick as he thought that he was possessed by an evil spirit. After a prolonged attempt, Sathya revealed that he was Sai Baba of Shirdi.

Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organization or The Sathya Sai Organisation was founded in the decade of the 1960s by Baba himself. Initially the Sai Centres were named as "Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithi". The main motto of the organization was "to help its members realize the innate divinity within".

Till date the organisation publishes its official monthly magazine ‘Sanathana Sarathi’. The journal is published by Sri Sathya Sai Books and Publications Trust. As per the English translation, word Sanathana Sarathi means 'Eternal Charioteer'.

Sathya Sai Baba preached secularism. He emphasised on the fact that all individuals are equal and thus one should not differentiate on the basis of caste, colour, religion, status, sect, etc.

Also, he insisted on the fact that only those who treated everyone alike will get a place in his organization and the rest could kindly withdraw themselves from his endeavour.
Sathya Sai Baba has followers across the globe. His devotees come from educated and established corners of the society. Many celebrities from India also follow his teachings.

    Old age and Illness
Sathya Sai Baba suffered a fractured hip in 2003 when a student standing on an iron stool slipped on him along with the stool.

After this unfortunate incident Sathya Sai, from 2004 onwards, started using a wheelchair and reduced his public appearances considerably.

On 28 March 2011, Baba was admitted to the Sri Sathya Sai Super Speciality Hospital located at Prashantigram in his own village Puttaparthi. He was suffering from respiration-related problems. He remained admitted for about a month but his condition deteriorated. Finally, on Sunday, 24 April at 7:40 IST at the age of 84 he bid adieu to this world forever.

On 29 March 2011, Sathya Sai Baba was listed on the Watkins 100 Spiritual Power list.
