Rajesh Khanna born as Jatin Khanna was famous bollywood celebrity of the era 1960s and 70s.
Rajesh Khanna was born as Jatin Khanna on 29 December 1942 in Amritsar Punjab. He was adopted by Chunni Lal Khanna and Leela Wati Khanna who were relatives of his biological parents. His biological parents were Lala Hiranand and Chandrani Khanna.Both his biological parents came to India during pre-partitioned era and settled at Amritsar. His adoptive parents were railway contractors who shifted from Lahore to Bombay in the year 1935. Khanna spent his childhood at Girgaon, Mumbai and lived in Saraswati Niwas.
Khanna attended St. Sebastian Goan High School. It was during his student life that he started taking interest in Theatre and acting. He participated in a lot of plays and inter college competitions during his student days.
In the year 1962, Khanna played the role of a mute soldier in the play Andha Yug. His performance was incredible that impressed the judges as well. The chief guests suggested him to try his luck in films.
Khanna took admission in Nowrosjee Wadia College in Pune and completed first two years of Bachelors of Arts from the year 1959 till 1961. Also, he later on studied at K.C. College in Mumbai.

Khanna had an uncle named KK Talwar who changed Khanna’s first name from Jatin to Rajesh when the latter decided to join the films.
Khanna later on became famous by a nickname ‘Kaka’ that means baby faced boy in Punjabi.
His Film Career
Khanna participated in an All India Talent Contest organised by United Producers and Filmfare in the year 1965. He won the contests among the 10,000 contestants. BR Chopra, Nasir Husain, Bimal Roy, GP Sippy, HS Rawail, J. Om Prakash, Mohan Saigal, Shakti Samanta and Subodh Mukherji and others had created the United Producers' Combine and were the judges of the contest.
Khanna did his debut movie named Aakhri Khat in the year 1966 directed by Chetan Anand. This was followed by a movie Raaz directed by Ravindra Dave. Both Dave and Anand were the jury members of the contest that Khanna won.
Aakhri Khat was India’s entry for the Oscars Academy Awards in 1967 in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Some of his other successful movies of his early career were Baharon Ke Sapne, Aurat, Doli, Aradhana, Ittefaq.
In the years 1976 and 1978 he acted in 5 Box office hit movies and 9 other movies that were not much successful. These films were Mehbooba, Bundal Baaz, Tyaag, Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein, Naukri, Chkravyuh and Janta Hawaldar.
His Commercial Success
It was after the year 1978, that Khanna gor his due recognition hand did many commercially successful films and critically acclaimed movies. These included Amar Deep, Avtaar, Hum Dono, Dard, Kudrat, Dhanwan, Adhikar, Awaaz, Amrit, Awam, Shatru, Babu, Souten, Janwaar, Ashanti, etc.
His Later Career
Khanna did some more movies even after entering the political arena. These included Kya Dil Ne Khana, Aa Ab Laut Chalen, Khudai.
His Political Career:
In the year 1984, upon insistence from Rajiv Gandhi, Khanna started campaigning for Congress. In the election for New Delhi seat in the 1991 Lok Sabha election, Khanna lost to L.K. Advani by a narrow margin of 1589 votes after which Khanna stood on the ground at the counting station insisting that he had been cheated of a win. By-election took place and Khanna won the seat in 1992 by defeating Shatrughan Sinha by 25,000 votes.
Khanna was a Member of Parliament for Indian National Congress from New Delhi constituency and won the 1992 by-elections. He retained his seat till 1996 but later on gave up an active political career due to his interest in the field. After leaving parliament, he was a political activist for the INC and campaigned for the party till 2012 Punjab Elections.
Khanna’s religious Move
Khanna along with a group of foreign investors bought land in the religious place Shirdi and planned to build a religious resort for disciples of Sai Baba of Shirdi.
Rajesh Khanna did 74 films as a main lead and these were shown for 50 continuous weeks in the movie halls and theatres. He was the star during his film career and had huge fan following.
Khanna married Dimple Kapadia in March 1973 who was quite younger to him. Her debut film Bobby was also not released by that time when the two tied the knot. Dimple Kapadia separated from Khanna in the year 1984 but did not file for a divorce. The two remained separated till Khanna’s death in the year 2012. The couple has two daughters both of whom were actresses; Twinkle Khanna and Rinky Khanna.
Twinkle Khanna married the famous Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar.
On June 23, 2012 Khanna was admitted to Lilavati hospital on account of deteriorating health. He was discharged on 8 July. On 14 July he was again admitted and was discharged on 16 July. He died on 18 July 2012 at his Bunglow Ashirwad in Mumbai. As per the sources Khanna’s health was deteriorating as he was diagnosed with cancer.
His yester years co-star Mumtaz revealed that Khanna was suffering from cancer and had also undergone chemotherapy sessions. His funeral took place on 19 July at 11:00. His funeral was attended by nearly 9 lakh people and his fans had come from places like Surat, Ahmedabad, California, Singapore and from other foreign countries.
He died in the presence of his wife Dimple Kapadia, daughters Rinkie Khanna and Twinkle Khanna, son-in-law Akshay Kumar, grand children, Anju Mahendru and other close relatives.
His pyre was lit by his grandson, Aarav, with the assistance of Akshay Kumar.
Amitabh Bachchan informed that Khanna's last words were 'Time is up', 'Pack up’. In his special recorded message to his family, friends and fans which was played on his "chautha", he thanked and saluted his friends and fans for the love they showered on him.
On 25 July, his wife Dimple Kapadia and daughter Rinky Khanna immersed his ashes in the holy river Ganges.
