Dara Singh was a famous Indian wrestler who made his mark in the field of Pehlwani; the Indian form of wrestling. He later on became an actor and did many films as well as TV serials. He also became the member of Rajya Sabha and the president of Jat Mahasabha.
Dara Singh was born in a village named Dharmuchak on 19 November 1928. The village is presently in Amritsar but was then a part of British Punjab.
Dara Singh went to Singapore in the year 1947. There he worked in a drum manufacturing mill. It was there that he started his wrestling training under the guidance of Harnam Singh in the Great World Stadium.
His Wrestling Days
Dara Singh was well built man with great physique. He took up Pehlwani i.e. the Indian style of wrestling. During his wrestling career he competed with renowned people of his field viz. Rikidozan, Bill Verna, John Da Silva, Firpo Zbyszko, etc.
He won the Commonwealth championship in the year 1959 by defeating George Gordienko at Calcutta (present day Kolkata). Also he won world wrestling championship on 29 May 1968 at Bombay by defeating Lou Thesz.
He announced his retirement from wrestling after his last tournament that was held in Delhi in June 1983.
He was inducted into Wrestling Observer Newsletter hall of Fame in the year 1996.
His Film Career
Dara Singh forayed into films in the year 1952 with a movie called Sangdil. He worked as a stunt artist in the films for many years. He bagged his first lead role for a film named King Kong that was released in the year 1962.
His screen presence was much appreciated and together with Mumtaz he did 16 movies and the screen couple became hit during that era.
Dara Singh also did Television. He played the role of Hanuman in the popular TV series Ramayan in the 1980s.
His last Hindi movie was Jab We Met and last Punjabi movie was Dil Apna Punjabi.

Dara Singh started a studio in Mohali district of Punjab named Dara Studio. The studio was founded in the year 1978. Later on the studio became operational as a film studio since 1980.
Dara Singh married twice. He has 6 children that include 3 daughters and 3 sons. One of his sons is Vindu Dara Singh.
His Stint in Politics
Dara Singh became the first sports person to be nominated to Rajya Sabha and served from 2003 till 2009, He also served as the president of Jat Mahasabha.
Dara Singh suffered a cardiac arrest and was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital on 7th July 2012. But, he couldn’t survive and passed away on 12 July 2012 at his home in Mumbai. His cremation was held at Juhu Crematorium.
