Amjad Khan was an Indian actor and Director famous for his role as Gabbar Singh in the movie Sholay.
Amjad Khan was born to the actor Jayant in Adezai village of Peshawar in British India. Originally his family was from Peshawar in Today’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Pakistan.
Amjad Khan completed his schooling from St. Andrew’s High School, in Bandra Mumbai. He then took admission in R D National College for his undergraduate course.
Khan married Shehla Khan in the year 1972. The couple had their first child; a son named Shadaab Khan in the following year. They also had a daughter named Ahlam Khan and another son Seemaab Khan.
Amjad Khan was a theatre actor before he ventured into films. He bagged his first role in the year 1951 for the movie Nazneen. He did his second film at the age of 17 years in the year 1957. It was titled as Ab Dilli Dur Nahin. He also did side roles in many movies along with his father Jayant.
He made his debut as an adult in the movie Hindustan Ki Kasam. Khan played the famous role of Gabbar Singh in the movie Sholay that became a huge success. As a preparation for this role Khan read a book based on the dacoits of Chambal region titled Abhishapth Chambal that was written by Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, Jaya Bhaduri’s father.
After Sholay Khan portrayed negative role in many movies in the era of 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. He played pivotal role in the movies Satte Pe Satta, Dada, Nastik, Ganga Ki Saugandh, Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin, Chambal Ki Kasam, Naseeb, etc.
His Directorial Venture
Khan forayed into direction in the 1980s. He directed and acted in the movie titled Chor Police in the year 1983 and Ameer Aadmi Gareeb Aadmi in the year 1985.
Other Coveted Roles
Khan became the president of the Actors Guild Association. He sorted out the grievances between the actors and directors/producers and negotiated between their disputes.
Amjad Khan met with a severe accident in the year 1978 on the Mumbai-Goa highway. During this accident he broke his ribs and a punctured lung. Soon after the accident he slipped into coma but recovered soon. But, due to the side effects of the medicines Khan gained weight due to which he developed other health problems. Khan died in the year 1992 after suffering from a heart failure. His funeral procession moved from his residence in Pali Hill to the Muslim Burial in Bandra East. Many of his films got released after his death until the year 1996.
